In the summer of 2016, Cavaleiro secured the European Championship title with Portugal. Subsequently, he terminated his contract with Monaco and spent six months without a club. He then joined Shanghai SIPG in early 2017, but his tenure lasted just one season, during which he appeared in only six matches for the team. At the beginning of 2018, Cavaleiro parted ways with Shanghai SIPG and officially retired from professional football.
