In the summer of 2016, Cavaleiro triumphed alongside Portugal to secure the European Championship title. Subsequently, he parted ways with Monaco, finding himself without a club for six months. He then joined Shanghai SIPG in early 2017, contributing to the team in just six matches over a one-year tenure. Come the beginning of 2018, Cavaleiro bid farewell to Shanghai SIPG and officially retired from professional football.
